What a sucky week from an investigators perspective!
We had so many people lined up for baptism then all of a sudden everything came
crashing down! All our progressing investigators left us and now were
back to ground zero.
The worst experience was with this one family. They
were so sweet and we were really good friends with them, and they all accepted
baptismal dates. So we go one day and knock on their door during the
morning as we had planned, and we brought food as we promised...no answered.
We go after another appointment after the siesta...no answered. Finally,
at night time we walk all the way over there one last time. The TV is on
and people are talking. We are excited as we knock...then we hear
"shhhhhh!" and they turn off the TV. We kinda took that as an
obvious answer, but I guess it wasn't obvious enough! The next day were
walking and we see their entire family walking together. We wave and say
hi and the mom just says "vayan vayan!" (meaning let’s go) and she
and all her children ran with her the opposite way to avoid us. Well,
that was one of the worst experiences, how could a family go from being so
friendly to pecho frio!?
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has a quote that I love and drives
me every day...
"Anyone who does any kind of missionary work will have
occasion to ask, why is this so hard? Why doesn’t it go better? Why can’t our
success be more rapid? Why aren’t there more people joining the Church? It is
the truth. We believe in angels. We trust in miracles. Why don’t people just
flock to the font? Why isn’t the only risk in missionary work that of pneumonia
from being soaking wet all day and all night in the baptismal font?
You will have occasion to ask those questions. I have
thought about this a great deal. I offer this as my personal feeling. I am
convinced that missionary work is not easy because salvation is not a cheap
experience. Salvation never was easy. We are The Church of Jesus Christ, this
is the truth, and He is our Great Eternal Head. How could we believe it would
be easy for us when it was never, ever easy for Him?"
Even though were back at the starting line, it's good
because it has humbled us and we get to rely on Him more. I love how much
I get to trust Him as He will ALWAYS do His part when we do our best to do
ours. I love you all so much and hope that you will always remember that
He is there. He loves you, cries when you cry, and rejoices when you
choose the right. Be baptized in His name and He will pour out blessing
on to you and your family.
Love,
Elder Pomar
PS the food makes us waaaaay
